Blog #16 Deutsch lehren

Arianna wants to learn many languages, but she picked German first. I speak one (unless you count the little phrases I still remember from high school Spanish class). You know the language class where you memorize a bunch of vocabulary words, but never actually speak conversationally. That is my background. How am I suppose to teach her this? She did not wait for me to figure out the answer. She decided to check out a book from the library Beginners German. It’s a kids book on learning German. And did my creative, free-spirit, spitfire try and memorize words from the book? Nope. She started drawing comic strips with dogs speaking to each other in German. Thankfully, my husband speaks a bit of German so he helped her with the proper form of converting the conversations. It is fantastic. She is truly learning a new language through art, and pure determination. I love this kiddo. Arianna is the living version of the phrase “where there is a will, there is a way.” I am learning lots from her. My biggest lesson to date: do not wait for others to teach you, for you are capable of learning many things all on your own. Way to go, beautiful girl. Ich bin immer wieder erstaunt Sie (I am amazed by you).
